Silkies are truly unique among chickens. The Silkie is said to have 9 specific genetic mutations to make them truly different. The Chinese are given credit for developing the Silkie to please past emperors. Marco Polo reported encountering a chicken considered by many to be the predecessor of the modern Silkie during his travels to China in the 1500’s. Some of the characteristics that make them stand apart from other chickens are first and foremost the feathering, which appears much like fur due to the lack of barbicels that cause most feathers to hold together along the shaft. They have 5 toes where most chickens have only four. Silkies have crests, black skin and bones as well as feathered legs and feet. The comb on a silkie is different and referred to as a walnut comb. Silkies come in both bearded and non-bearded.

The American Bantam Association accepts six standard colors for Silkies: black, blue, buff, white, partridge and gray. There are also other colors: red, calico, cuckoo, etc. One theory has it that white was the original color with black following as a mutation. Buff was introduced by way of a Cochin cross, as was the cuckoo pattern.

It is believed that the Silkie has managed to survive since ancient times due to their determination to hatch and raise anything that comes in an shell. They are frequently broody and devoted mothers. Male Silkies have been known to be excellent with raising young as well. I have a Buff Silkie rooster that has taken over a brood of chicks and cared for them until they were 9 weeks old. Prior to incubators people kept Silkies to hatch out fowl of many varieties.

The standard for Silkies differes by color. Those wishing further details should refer to the American Silkie Bantam Club for information on standards at; http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.org

The Silkie is truly an endearing little chicken. Their gentle personality and inability to fly makes them the perfect backyard pet, one that will provide you breakfast.
